By Kerry Davies, Health Champions Coordinator at Telford & Wrekin Council
I’ve been Health Champions Coordinator since January and it’s been a great new challenge for me – one that’s made a difference to people’s lives. Health and wellbeing is important to me and to my family, and I truly believe the Health Champion programme can contribute to people’s happiness and general wellbeing.
Having been a volunteer myself for over 20 years, I fully appreciate the commitment volunteers make and I’m so proud of the Health Champions that I am now supporting.
It always surprises me how enthusiastic and keen our volunteers are – their thoughts and ideas are invaluable and really help move things forward. They share their own stories and experiences which make them unique, but overall they want to help others.
Already they have completed training, put ideas forward and taken part in a range of activities that have benefited their friends and family. This makes me feel so happy!
There is so much to gain from being a Health Champion – meeting new people, learning new skills, building confidence and helping others. We are always looking to recruit more volunteers of all ages across the borough and support them in turning their ideas into a reality. If you think this is for you, please do get in touch.
Become a health champion and make in difference in your local community
As a Health Champion you’ll be actively meeting with people and improving other people’s lives.
But being a Health Champion isn’t just about helping others – you can also help yourself. The role is a great way to improve your own emotional and physical health, confidence, self-esteem and self-belief.
Full training and support in your role will be provided, and you’ll always have the opportunity to learn and try new things. It’s a great thing to put on your CV.
Health Champions are given the flexibility to fit the role around their existing lives. You’re not committed to volunteering a certain amount of time, all we ask is that you give just one hour per week on average. Even that amount of time can make all the difference.
