When Linda attended her lung cancer screening appointment, she never expected it would become the starting point for one of the most important health journeys of her life.
At sixty-three years old, Linda had been smoking around thirty roll-ups a day for almost fifty years. She had never attempted to quit before. Like many long-term smokers, smoking had become part of her daily routine and something she had lived with for decades.
Following her screening appointment, Linda was contacted by the Healthy Lifestyles Stop Smoking Service and offered free support to quit. She accepted both the offer and the challenge.
A wake-up call for better health
During her first appointment with Stop Smoking Advisor Ollie, Linda spoke openly about her reasons for wanting to stop smoking. Health concerns were her biggest motivation. Living with high cholesterol, asthma and borderline COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), she recognised that the lung cancer screening had acted as a wake-up call. It prompted her to reflect on her health and consider positive changes she could make for the future.
Together, Ollie and Linda developed a personalised quit plan that focused on understanding her smoking triggers, changing established routines and introducing healthier habits to replace smoking throughout the day.
Small changes, big results
Over the first two weeks, Linda made remarkable progress. Using nicotine replacement therapy, including nicotine patches and lozenges, she successfully reduced her smoking from thirty roll-ups a day to just six. The medication helped manage nicotine withdrawal and cravings, while practical behavioural strategies helped her navigate situations where she would normally smoke. Although this was a significant achievement, there was still one important step to take: becoming completely smoke-free.
During their third appointment, Ollie and Linda discussed the importance of the “not a puff” rule and the benefits of fully stopping smoking. Linda embraced the challenge. She removed all smoking-related items from her home to reduce temptation and committed herself fully to her quit journey.
Building new healthy habits
Mornings proved to be Linda’s most challenging time, as smoking had long been part of the start of her day. To overcome this, she introduced a new routine and began taking a walk every morning. This simple change helped her break old habits, improve her fitness and start each day feeling positive and energised. Over the following weeks, her nicotine replacement therapy was gradually reduced, helping her slowly and comfortably become nicotine-free.
On 1 July, during her very first quit attempt, Linda reached her 12-week smoke-free milestone.
Reflecting on her achievement, she says:
“Thanks to Oliver for supporting me. All the way to the end, he was there to encourage me to quit, so thanks again for all you did for me.”
Linda’s story demonstrates the positive impact that lung cancer screening programmes can have beyond early detection. For many people, the invitation to attend screening provides an opportunity to reflect on their health and make changes that can have lasting benefits. It also highlights the value of combining that opportunity with dedicated stop smoking support, giving residents access to the practical help, encouragement and treatment they need to succeed.
Could this be your story?
Quitting smoking is rarely easy, particularly after decades of tobacco use. However, Linda’s experience shows that it’s never too late to stop, and that with the right support, even someone making their first quit attempt after 50 years of smoking can achieve lasting success.
The benefits extend far beyond health. By quitting smoking, Linda not only improved her wellbeing, she also saved enough money to book a holiday to Morocco, something she was looking forward to enjoying as a reward for her hard work and determination.
If you’ve been thinking about quitting, let Linda’s story inspire you. Every smoke-free journey starts with a single step, and support is available every step of the way.
