A regular 10 minute brisk walk can make you feel better in so many ways. It can boost your energy, clear your head and lift your mood.
By Clare Harland
Brisk walking is simply walking faster than usual – at a pace that gets your heart pumping.
It can help people with lower back pain and those at risk of high blood pressure. It’s also seriously good for your long-term health – it can reduce your risk of serious illnesses like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Start with a 10 minute brisk walk a day and then see if you can gradually build up to 150 minutes a week. Doing 150 minutes a week is the ideal but 10 is a good start. Downloading the Active 10 app will allow you to track your progress.
It’s the easy way to improve your health and wellbeing. No gym memberships, no Lycra. Just 10 minutes and you!
Enid’s story
Some people in Telford have already been motivating themselves to do 10 minutes of brisk walking every day by using the Active 10 app.
One of our Healthy Lifestyles Advisors introduced a 70 year old lady called “Enid”, to the Active 10 app and she has successfully used it to improve her health!
Enid was classed as obese when she was referred to the Healthy Lifestyles team by her GP.
Enid wanted to make changes to her diet and activity and so she was introduced to the One You website and encouraged to download the Active 10 app on to her phone.
Her grandson helped to download Active 10 along with another health app to record her daily food intake everyday. Enid found the tool motivated her to complete her goals and keep track of her food intake.
Enid now does more than 3 hours a week of brisk walking. She is eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables, and decreased her dairy and snack intake. The app helped her to be more mindful about her alcohol as well.
The apps on her phone allowed Enid to track what was happening, see what she was doing wrong, and find the motivation to make changes to her life.
