In February we delivered the fifth webinar in our Schools Health and Wellbeing series, the aim of which is to support schools and professionals around a range of health and wellbeing topics. February’s session, delivered by the Healthy Families team, looked at how to sensitively and confidently talk with children, young people and families about body image and weight.
Talking about health and weight with children and families doesn’t have to be awkward. When the focus of the conversation is on everyday things like food, activity, sleep, and feeling good, it helps children feel supported rather than judged.
Many children are already aware of their bodies, so open and kind conversations can build confidence and reduce worry. Small changes – like being more active together or trying healthier meals – can make a big different over time.
Who are the Healthy Families team?
Healthy Families is a free service run by Telford & Wrekin Council that supports families to live healthier lives.
They help families by:
- Encouraging healthy eating and being active
- Supporting children to grow into a healthy weight, rather than focusing on weight loss
- Using positive, non‑judgmental language
- Working with parents to set small, realistic goals
- Offering one‑to‑one support, either in person or over the phone
